It’s 1942 and German law has been imposed in Thessaloniki, Greece, where Estrea, a young Jewish girl, has fallen in love with Yorgos, a Christian resistance fighter who works in a small nightclub. The club acts as a retreat from the atmosphere that has taken over the city and people gather there to hear famed bouzouki player, Vasilis Tsitsanis. But as the Nazis close in on the city, even the club becomes tense and Estrea and Yorgos are forced to make life-changing decisions.
Inspired by real events, and adapted from George Skarbadonis’ novel of the same name, Cloudy Sunday is a powerful and beautifully rendered drama, set among a community that was almost entirely lost to the Holocaust. Featuring enchanting classics of Sephardic Jewish music.
Greek-inspired reception from 6:30-7:00 PM. Panel discussion with Susan Goldman, President of the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts; Attorney Jane Miliotis, Lecturer at Elms College; and Christopher Zaferes, Seminarian at Hellenic College Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology.
